Wit, Satire and Romance from Ernst Lubitsch
    THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER
    Hosted by Jennifer Fumiko Cahill

Based on the play Parfumerie by Miklos Laszlo (originally titled Illatszertar.)  A Budapest gift-shop clerk and the newly hired shopgirl hate each other almost at first sight. At work, they argue incessantly, never suspecting that they are carrying on a tender romance through the mail, as anonymous pen pals. Later remade as the movie musical In the Good Old Summertime, and the modern rom-com You've Got Mail.

Starring James Stewart, Margaret Sullavan, and Frank Morgan. Directed by Ernst Lubitsch.

    Fup, by Jim Dodge

    A Readers' Theater Adaptation

A  live theatrical production of the entertaining novella Fup, Humboldt State University and College of the Redwoods' Book of the Year for  2013/2014.  Fup tells the story of Jake Santee, his grandson Tiny, and their adopted mallard, Fup, an eccentric duck with a fondness for drinking moonshine. Please note that all of Jim Dodge's salty language is intact.

HSU Communications Instructor James Floss and a group of seasoned Chamber Reader alumni will stage a word-for-word adaptation of the acclaimed novella, with visual accompaniment, and an intermission.   Hilarity is intertwined with themes of love, magic, death and transcendence. The Sacramento Bee says, "often eloquent, and always funny, Fup is a contemporary tall tale that ranks with the best."
