Phillip Smith-Hanes was appointed County Administrative Officer for Humboldt County on December 19, 2009.
He brought to the position more than 13 years of experience in local government, in both cities and counties in two states.
Immediately prior to his appointment as CAO, Mr. Smith-Hanes served for two years as Humboldt County’s Assistant County Administrative Officer.
Mr. Smith-Hanes earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Kansas State University, a law degree from Washburn University Law School
and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Kansas. He and his husband Stanley live in the Myrtletown area
of unincorporated Humboldt County with their cat Thumbelina, a former resident of the Humboldt County Animal Shelter.
