Employment Training Division

The Employment Training Division provides a comprehensive range of workforce preparation activities, benefiting job seekers, laid off workers, youth, incumbent workers, new entrants to the workforce, and employers.

The purpose of these activities is to provide job seekers the services they need to successfully obtain employment, stay employed, and increase their earnings. This, in turn, improves the quality of the workforce, reduces welfare dependency, and improves the productivity and competitiveness of Humboldt County.

These activities are authorized by the Workforce Investment Act (WIA), funded by the Department of Labor and are accessed through The Job Market, Humboldt County’s local one-stop center. For more information about The Job Market, please go to: http://www.thejobmarket.org.

Available Services

The WIA authorizes services for youth, adults, and laid-off workers. Eligible youth must be 14 to 21 years of age, low income, and meet at least one of six specific barriers to employment. A year-round youth program emphasizes attainment of basic skill competencies, enhanced opportunity for academic and occupational training, and provides exposure to the job market and employment. Activities may include instruction leading to completion of secondary school, tutoring, internships, job shadowing, work experience, adult mentoring, and comprehensive guidance and counseling. The program emphasizes services for out-of-school youth. Various program operators throughout Humboldt County provide services for youth.

Eligible adults must be age 18 or older. Eligible laid-off workers are generally individuals who have been laid off from their previous job because of a business closure or a reduction in workforce. This also includes self-employed individuals. Access to all services provided by the Employment Training Division is through The Job Market. The Job Market is a comprehensive One-Stop center providing access to a full range of services pertaining to employment, training, education, employer assistance, and guidance for obtaining other assistance. The Job Market has four locations throughout Humboldt County. For more information about The Job Market, visit http://www.thejobmarket.org
