Ancestry.com  The Fortuna Branch Library has a subscription to this genealogy database.  Unlike the other resources below, it cannot be used online from home.

Use General Reference Center Gold to find articles from newspapers, reference books, and periodicals, many with full-text and images. Find the latest current events, popular culture, business and industry coverage, the arts and sciences, sports, hobbies, and more.

 

 

Associations Unlimited  --  Addresses of Organizations

Use this database to get contact information and basic facts about approximately 460,000 international and U.S. national, regional, state, and local nonprofit membership organizations. 

 

 

Biography in Context  -- Lives of Famous People
Get full text articles about the lives of famous people from reference books, magazines, and other reliable sources. This database allows you to search for people by name, occupation, nationality, ethnicity, birth/death dates and places, and gender.  You can then read or print the article.


 

Biography and Genealogy Master Index is an online index.   It tells you where to find more information in books, and is especially helpful when you need to do in-depth research on someone who is hard to find out about.  It covers more than 1,000  important biographical reference sources.

 

 

California Digital Newspaper Collection, 1849  - 1911

Historic articles from newspapers across California can be searched by keyword with this helpful tool from the University of California at Riverside.

Ebscohost eBooks (formerly Netbooks)   -- Read nonfiction online

This gives you access to specialized encyclopedias, 24 hours a day any day!  Medical encyclopedias, law, animals of the world, a diet and nutrition reference, and historical costumes are among the topics you will find here.


GreenFILE, a Bibliographic Database of Environmental Concerns
Indexes scholarly and general interest titles as well as government documents and reports.

 

 

Grzimek's Animal Life Encyclopedia

Information about almost any animal you could name, suitable for reports and  exploring for fun.  Includes mammals, birds, fishes, reptiles and amphibians, insects and other invertebrates.  Also covers the biomes these animals live in, and their evolution.  Listen to the animal sounds, see pictures and sometimes films of the creatures in action.  Links to journal articles and other information sources for further research.

Times-Standard Index  

A local index of the Eureka Times-Standard daily newspaper, covering articles 1989 - 2005; maintained by Humboldt State University Library.  This index allows you to search for keywords and phrases and find the dates and titles of articles.  You may use these dates to find the articles on microfilm by using the microfilm readers and rolls at the library.
