The Countywide Fire Plan Update Process

The original countywide fire plan was completed and approved by the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors in 2006 and was intended to be used as a framework for fire coordination, prevention, and protection throughout the county. In the spring of 2013, the Humboldt County Fire Safe Council (FSC) completed the process of formulating and obtaining approval of an updated version of the plan. As part of the Update process the plan name has been changed from the "Humboldt County Master Fire Protection Plan" to the "Humboldt County Community Wildfire Protection Plan" or "CWPP".

CWPPs are a vehicle for communities to identify priority actions for wildfire prevention and overall fire safety on both private and public lands. They provide an opportunity to identify community needs with regards to prevention, preparedness, mitigation, and wildfire response. The CWPP process involves extensive collaboration between organized groups of homeowners, and local, state, and federal agencies.

As part of the update process, a series of public workshops took place in different communities throughout the County. The focus of the workshops and one of the main objectives of the CWPP process is to engage in meaningful discussions at the community level to determine priorities and strategies to address the threat of wildfire to an individual community. At each workshop, local residents worked with firefighters and agency partners to identify projects to help prepare their homes, neighborhoods, and communities for wildfire.

A public review period on the draft CWPP update was held from November 30, 2012 to February 15, 2013. All comments received were incorporated into a final draft plan of the CWPP and reviewed by the Humboldt County Fire Safe Council. On April 15, 2013 the Humboldt County Fire Safe Council approved the new CWPP to be forwarded on for review by the Humboldt County Fire Chiefs Association, CAL FIRE, and the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors. Later in April, the Fire Chiefs authorized their President to sign the plan and the Humboldt - Del Norte CAL FIRE Unit Chief also signed the certification and agreement cover sheet. On May 28, 2013 the updated plan was presented to the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors, accompanied by a PowerPoint presentation. The motion to certify that the CWPP met all of the standards listed under the Healthy Forests Restoration Act was approved unanimously. The approved CWPP is available on this website.
