Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the Arcata/Eureka Airport after an explosive device was reported. Shortly after noon today Sheriff’s Deputies received a call from Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officials to report that an incendiary device had been found in a piece of checked luggage at about 9:00 this morning. Sheriff’s Deputies were shown the device and then called out the Sheriff’s Office’s Explosive Ordinances Disposal expert. He confirmed the device was a homemade explosive and that it was a violation of California Penal Code Section 12303.2, a felony, to bring the device to the airport.
TSA officials told deputies that the man whose luggage the bomb was found in had been allowed to board his scheduled flight. The Sheriff’s Office notified the FBI and Federal Air Marshals. They will attempt to make contact with the man when he lands on the East Coast; he is scheduled to land at 6:15 PST.
The explosive device was secured by the Sheriff’s Office and rendered safe. The Sheriff’s Office will be continuing to work with federal officials in this investigation.
More details will be released as the investigation continues.
