Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputies, the Arcata Fire Department, and Airport Emergency Personnel responded to the Arcata/Eureka Airport this afternoon after a single-engine airplane landed with its landing gear still up. Miles Danley Mackey, 66 of Fortuna, took off from the Rohnerville Airport in his Cessna 177 at about 3:00 this afternoon. He told deputies that he had been practicing landings and had already landed safely twice at Murray Airfield. Then, at about 4:00 PM, Mr. Mackey landed at the Arcata/Eureka Airport but his landing gear was up. The airplane skidded on its belly for about one quarter of a mile before coming to a stop. Mr. Mackey, the sole occupant of the airplane, walked away from the crash uninjured.
The NTSB released the aircraft for removal from the runway and a local tow company moved it. Airport officials said no commercial flights were delayed and that damage to the runway was minimal. Federal Aviation Administration personnel will conduct an investigation to officially determine the cause of the crash landing. Mr. Mackey, who is co-owner of the plane, estimated the damage to be about $25,000.
