On 06-30-13, approximately 1:00 p.m. the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a woman in the surf approximately 75 yards out at the North end of Shelter Cove near Abalone Point, needing assistance. Deputies, the Shelter Cove Volunteer Fire Department, the Bureau of Land Management, United States Coast Guard and Cal Fire were all dispatched to the scene. The Shelter Cove Fire Department reached the 32 year old female victim in the surf and attempted life saving measures. The female was pronounced dead at the scene and the Humboldt County Coroners Office was notified and responded. The investigating deputy learned the female initially went into the surf voluntarily and was swimming with no problems when for unknown reasons she appeared to have drowned.
The victim’s identity will be released by the Humboldt County Coroners Office after next of kin is notified.
