On 06-30-13, approximately 3:40 p.m. the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office received a call from California State Parks regarding a possible missing surfer in the area of College Cove. Deputies and Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue personnel were called out to respond to the scene. When deputies arrived they learned the surfer’s vehicle, property, wetsuit and watch were located, however the surfer was missing. Friends reported him missing to a State Park Ranger, fearing he had gone back into the water and possibly drowned. While deputies were on scene a group of citizens approached the deputies and reported a man matching the missing person’s description was seen walking with blood on his legs in a brushy area.
Deputies located and met with the man, who was the missing surfer at approximately 5:30 p.m., he had received scratches from walking through the brush. He told the deputies he fell asleep near a log, and after he woke up he was disoriented and walked into the brush, injuring his legs. He told the deputies he did not want medical attention and was able to care for himself.
