Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to Big Lagoon yesterday after it was reported that a boat had capsized and a man was missing. At about 3:00 PM deputies, along with Coast Guard and State Parks personnel arrived at Big Lagoon. They learned that a 12-foot folding aluminum boat had capsized, sending all three occupants into the water. Two of the occupants, Tyler Butler-Smith, 20, and his three year-old half sister (with the assistance of Tyler), were able to make it to shore. However, there was no sign of the third occupant, a 40 year-old Trinidad resident.
The search for the missing man continued throughout yesterday afternoon. It was suspended due to darkness last evening but began again this morning. Updates will be released as appropriate.
