A Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputies are looking for a man in connection with a serious assault that occurred in McKinleyville early Friday morning. At about 12:30 AM sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a reported “man down” on the 4000 block of Dows Prairie Road. Upon their arrival, deputies found 19 year-old William Phillip Baumgarten of Fortuna lying on the side of the road. Personnel from the Arcata Fire Department and Mad River Ambulance responded to the scene. Mr. Baumgarten was transported to a nearby hospital where doctors determined his injuries included a skull fracture.
There were several young adults and juveniles at a nearby residence who were attending a party. They told deputies that Baumgarten had been in attendance at the same party. Witnesses told deputies that another partygoer, Russell Martin Albers, 23 of McKinleyville, had a verbal confrontation with Baumgarten. The confrontation had escalated into a physical fight. Witnesses reported that Albers struck Baumgarten several times and then began banging Baumgarten’s head against the asphalt. Albers then left the area on foot.
Albers is Native American with short, dark brown hair and brown eyes. He is 5’11” tall and weighs about 250 pounds.
