Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to an area hospital late Wednesday night after an emergency room doctor reported a case of suspected child abuse. Deputies arrived at the hospital and found a fourteen-month-old female child on a ventilator with a life-threatening head injury. The emergency room doctor was suspicious about the nature and extent of the child’s injuries. Shortly before midnight, Sheriff’s Detectives arrived at the hospital to assist with the investigation. Then, at about 12:45 AM, Thursday, the child was flown to a Bay Area hospital for further treatment and testing.
Upon further investigation, Thursday afternoon Sheriff’s Detectives arrested Timothy James Tucker, 24 of McKinleyville. Tucker is married to a relative of the child’s mother and he was caring for the child when she was injured. Tucker was booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on one count of PC 273A(A) – Willful Injury to a Child, a felony. Tucker’s bail has been set at $50,000; he is expected to be arraigned on Monday.
The prognosis for the child is uncertain. She continues to be treated at a Bay Area hospital where she remains on a ventilator.
