The investigation is continuing into the death of a man who was in Sheriff’s Office custody early Monday morning. However, the preliminary results of an autopsy performed yesterday point to the cause of death as natural causes. The final cause of death will not be determined until laboratory work is completed several weeks from now. That lab work will verify what, if any drugs, the decedent may have been using.
The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office had arrested the decedent, a 46 year-old Myers Flat man, for being under the influence of a controlled substance, resisting or obstructing a peace officer, and a probation violation. He had been taken to the Humboldt County Correctional Facility at about 2:30 a.m. A few minutes after arriving, he went into respiratory distress. EMT’s were called as the facility’s Medical and Correctional staff began rescue breathing and resuscitation efforts. The man was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3:35 a.m.
