Location: McKinleyville

On February 2, 2005 at 9:46 p.m., deputies responded to a 911 call of an unknown injury at the Big Foot Service Station at 2601 Central Avenue in McKinleyville.

Upon their arrival at 9:51 p.m., deputies located an adult female who had sustained a single gunshot wound to the mid-stomach area. The female was transported to the Mad River Community Hospital, Arcata, where she underwent surgery for the gunshot wound and where she remains in serious condition.

Arrested at the scene was David James Russell, 47 of Rio Dell, for suspicion of PC273.5, Domestic Battery. The arrest for domestic battery was incidental to the shooting of the female victim. The shooting remains under investigation by detectives of the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office to the exact circumstances of the gunshot wound and potential additional charges.

David James Russell remains in custody at the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Correctional Facility, Eureka. Additional information releases will be provided as the investigation continues.
