Date Released: 5/11/2005
Subject: EOD Unit Called Out
Contact: Brenda Gainey, PIO
Case No#: 200502759
Released By: Brenda Gainey

Location: Eureka

Members of Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) Unit were called to Humboldt Waste Management Authority yesterday afternoon after an employee there discovered a highly unstable and explosive chemical. The employee at the Humboldt Waste Management Authority reported that a man had dropped off a bottle of Picric Acid for disposal. The alert employee realized the Picric Acid was old and had crystallized. Dry Picric Acid becomes a shock-sensitive explosive capable of releasing energy on a level similar to dynamite.

Members of the Sheriff’s Office’s EOD responded to the waste management business on West Hawthorn Street and determined that the chemical was too unstable to move safely on public roadways. Instead, the Picric Acid was rendered safe at the business site at the close of regular business hour. There were no injuries.
