In response to the catastrophic events in the Gulf Coast region, many residents in Humboldt County are inquiring about what they can do to help. As director of the Humboldt County Office of Emergency Services, Sheriff Gary Philp is encouraging those who may want to help to first visit the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) website.

FEMA’s website strongly discourages volunteers from reporting to affected areas as they can hamper recovery efforts and even endanger themselves and others. Instead, volunteer organizations are seeking cash donations to assist victims of Hurricane Katrina. FEMA’s website offers a list of reputable organizations accepting cash donations and/or volunteer assistance. While there is widespread concern for the victims, it is still best (and most effective) to work within establish organizations to help those who have been affected by this disaster.
