The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office responded to the corner of Central Avenue and Pickett Road this morning after receiving a report of a woman badly bleeding. Deputies arrived and learned that the woman had arrived for work at Eureka Pediatrics in McKinleyville. She had unlocked the business, entered the building and went to the back of the office. She reported that a short time later she walked toward the front of the office and was struck several times in the head with a blunt object. The victim was able to run out of the business and yell for help. Several employees from surrounding businesses responded to her calls for help. Additionally, they were able to provide a vehicle description as the suspect drove away from the scene.
Upon further investigation, Deputies and Sheriff’s Detectives were able to determine a possible suspect. At about 1:00 this afternoon Curtis Alan Darling, 21 of Willow Creek, was taken into custody without incident at the Town and County Mobile Home Village in Arcata. At the time of this writing, investigators are questioning Darling. He is expected to be booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility later today and charged with Assault with a Deadly Weapon, and Robbery.
The victim was transported to a local hospital where she is in stable condition. Because the Sheriff’s Office is still early into the investigation and the investigation is still ongoing, the name of the victim is being withheld at this time.
The business was not open and there were no patients or children present at the time of the assault.
