At about 12:30 a.m. this morning, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office received a report of an overdue private aircraft. A few hours later, the US Air Force indicated the aircraft had dropped off their radar; they supplied the Sheriff’s Office with approximate coordinates of the aircraft’s last known position. At about 7:30 this morning, Sheriff’s Deputies and Sheriff’s Posse members gathered to begin the search and rescue effort. The California Highway Patrol launched a helicopter from Redding to aid in the search. Helicopter personnel located debris on the ground on Simpson property, on Fickle Hill.
Ground units were able to find the wreckage on the 5000 block of Fickle Hill Road. The pilot (and only occupant) was deceased at the scene. The pilot’s flight plan indicated he was flying the single engine airplane from Los Angeles to the Arcata/Eureka Airport.
The name of the pilot is being withheld pending the notification of the next of kin. The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the cause of the accident.
