Case No#: 200604426
Released By: Brenda Godsey, PIO

Location: Madden Creek

Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the South Fork of the Trinity River shortly before 5:00 p.m. this evening after receiving a report that two men may have drowned. Deputies arrived at the scene (close to where Madden Creek empties into the river) and learned that two men had been swimming with family and friends. It was reported that the group had been floating down the river with their children. As the group came around a bend in the river, the current and depth of water suddenly changed. One of the adults began to struggle as the others moved the children to shore. The struggling swimmer went under the water and a second adult, the man’s brother, attempted to help him. The second man became exhausted and also went under water. Personnel from a number of agencies worked to find the two brothers. Willow Creek Volunteer Fire personnel recovered the two men from the river but resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful. The names of the victims are being withheld pending the notification of next of kin; both men were residents of Humboldt County.
