On Friday August 4, 2006 at 1820 hours, the California Department of Forestry (CDF) received a 911 cellular transfer of a structure fire at a residence in the McClellan Mountain area of Bridgeville, SR 36. The initial caller stated a structure was on fire with possible victim(s) still inside the structure.
At 1835 hours the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office received a request to respond to the fire for assistance. Prior to deputies arriving at the residence, a single male victim was located with substantial burn injuries. The victim was airlifted by CDF helicopter for medical aid.
Deputies arrived at the location at 1917 hours and found a shed type structure burned to the ground. The shed was approximately 10’ X 15’, constructed of wood with a metal roof. A small vegetation fire occurred in association with the structure fire, with an area of approximately 50’ X 50’ burned.
Arson investigators from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, CDF and Eureka Fire Department were summoned to investigate the cause of the fire. Arson Investigators have completed their investigation and determined the fire appeared to have been set by the male victim as a means of suicide.
A small outdoor marijuana grow was also located on the property, consisting of approximately 60 marijuana plants.
The male victim is currently at the University of California Davis, Burn Unit. The victim is listed in critical condition and has sustained substantial burns to 95% of his body.
The male victim is approximately 18-20 years old and his name is not being released at this time, pending complete notification of family members.
