On August 8, 2006 at 1405 hour the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a possible aircraft accident in the Shelter Cove area. Sheriff’s deputies and Fire personnel were dispatched to the area. The aircraft, a Cessna 182 with two persons aboard, was located on a hillside south of Shelter Cove. Due to the steep terrain, it took the efforts of California Department of Forestry, Shelter Cove and Beginnings Volunteer Fire Departments to reach the scene. A California highway Patrol helicopter was use to remove the victims (both deceased) from the crash site.
Members of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are responding to the area to investigate the crash.
The victims are from outside the area and their names are not being released until their next of kin are notified.
