On 8-11-06 at about 1850 hours, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office received a report of two surfers stranded on the cliffs to the Westside of the Trinidad Head. Sheriff’s deputies, Trinidad Police, Trinidad Volunteer Fire and a US Coast Guard helicopter responded to the area.
The Coast Guard helicopter located one of the individuals still stranded on the side of the Trinidad Head. The second individual was able to climb off the side of the cliff and walk to rescue personnel without assistance. The US Coast Guard helicopter hoisted the first individual to safety.
The rescued subjects were identified as Adam Peterson (age 21) and Dmitriy Stepanov (age 20). Both subjects were visiting the area from Alaska and were not familiar with local waters. Both parties had very minor cuts and scratches to their feet that did not require medical attention. They had no other injuries.
The subjects had been surfing in the area of the Trinidad beach when a series of waves pushed them south away from the beach and into the Trinidad Head. From there they were able to climb out of the surf and onto the cliffs.
