On August 26, 2006 at 12:30 p.m. the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a boating accident on Black Sands Beach in Shelter Cove. It was reported that the boat was upside-down in the surf with one person stuck inside. The second victim was able to get to shore. Sheriff Deputies and Fire personnel were dispatched to the area. The CDF engine from the Whitethorn station was in the area and responded to the scene. The fire crew had to cut a hole in the side of the boat to rescue the trapped victim. Both victims were treated and released at the scene.

In an interview with the victims of the accident, it was learned that the boat had engine trouble and they paddled to shore. Just prior to getting to the beach a large breaker hit the boat and capsized it. The operator Chester Owens estimated he was trapped for about 45 minutes. The victims are Chester and Dale Owens of Vacaville California.
