Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputies and members of the Sheriff’s Posse launched a rescue effort late Thursday night after receiving a report that a hunter had fallen and broken his leg. Shortly before 11:00 p.m. the Sheriff’s Office was notified that 50 year-old Martin McGuiness of Michigan, had been injured near Blake Mountain close to the Humboldt/Trinity County borders. Deputies from the Special Services Unit and members of the Sheriff’s Posse responded to the area and located the injured man. Due to the steep and rugged terrain, it was decided that it would be unsafe to attempt to move Mr. McGuiness until daylight. Deputy Rick Chandler and Posse member Rick Nicholson (a certified EMT) stabilized Mr. McGuiness and stayed with him through the night.
At about 9:30 this morning a CHP helicopter arrived and transported Mr. McGuiness to a Redding area hospital for treatment of his broken leg.
