A Humboldt County Correctional Officer was assaulted by an inmate in the Humboldt County Correctional Facility this morning. The officer was escorting the inmate back to his cell when the inmate, Jerad L. Morton, 29 of Eureka, attacked the officer. While holding a plastic eating utensil as a weapon, Morton slashed at the officer’s face. The officer was able to call for additional officers while he continued to defend himself. The additional officers were able to restrain Morton and place him in a cell. The officer who Morton attacked was treated at a local medical facility for abrasions to his face and scalp.
Morton will be booked for assault on a peace officer, assault with a deadly weapon, and assault on a custodial officer. He has been in the custody of the Humboldt County Correctional Facility since January 10,2007. He has been in custody while he faces previous charges that include resisting a peace officer, assault on a peace officer, assault on a custodial officer, and possession of a deadly weapon.
