On 02-27-07, at approximately 11:30 a.m. Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputies and Animal Control Officers served a search warrant on U-Haul truck in Redway. Officers discovered and seized thirty-three cats and three dogs from the vehicle.
A local animal welfare organization that was receiving complaints on the animals and their condition had alerted officers to the situation. Animal Control Officers responded to the Garberville area and with the assistance of deputies located the vehicle. After meeting with the driver, officers confirmed there were numerous cats and dogs living in the eight-foot cargo area of U-Haul truck in an inhumane environment. The driver told the officers she had been “rescuing” the cats in the area.
The animals’ overall health was good. However, a veterinarian examined the animals immediately after the seizure and found that many of them had veterinary issues that required treatment. During the veterinarian’s examination it was determined at least four of the cats were also in late term pregnancy.
The animals are currently being held at the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Animal Shelter.
Officers are continuing the investigation and will be submitting the case to the District Attorney’s Office for review.
