The Sheriff’s Work Alternative Program (SWAP) and the Humboldt Senior Resource Center are pleased to announce the start of the annual Senior Wood Project. The project allows for the distribution of low-cost firewood to moderate or low-income senior citizens over 55 whose primary source of heat is firewood. The program began in January of 1991 and since then, SWAP has distributed approximately 12,400 cords of low-cost firewood to those in need.

The program will operate on Saturdays from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm starting on Saturday, August 14, 2007 through Saturday, December 15, 2007 or until the wood is gone. The wood can be picked up behind the General Hospital Campus at 2200 Harrison Ave., Eureka, at the SWAP wood lot.

The wood is sold on a voucher system, according to income. Vouchers can be purchased at the following locations:

Humboldt Senior Resource Center
1910 California St.
Beginning July 16
Monday through Friday
9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
1:00 – 2:30 p.m.

Arcata Community Center
321 Community Park Way
August 14 – September 25
Tuesday Mornings
9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

Azalea Hall, Pierson Park
1620 Picket Rd.
Wednesday, August 8
Friday, September 28
12:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.

The Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the following local businesses and municipalities for their support and donations to the Sheriff’s Senior Wood Project: Cal-Trans, County Roads Department, California State Parks, the City of Eureka, Blue Lake Garbage, Green Diamond Resource Company, the McKinleyville Skeet Club, Renner Petroleum, Ken Barrilles Trucking, Kindley Burl, and the citizens of Humboldt County who have donated time and wood to this worthwhile program.
