An inmate in custody at the Humboldt County Correctional Facility died last evening shortly after being transported to a local hospital. Martin Frederick Cotton II, 26 of Eureka, had been in custody for less than two hours. He had been arrested by the Eureka Police Department and booked for battery on a peace officer, resisting arrest, and public intoxication.
After being booked into the Correctional Facility at 5:15 p.m., the inmate was placed in a cell by himself and visual observations were conducted every fifteen minutes. At 7:00 p.m. correctional staff noted that his breathing had become shallow and they called for medical staff and an ambulance. Staff initiated resuscitation efforts including rescue breathing and CPR.
Fire department, EMS, and ambulance personnel arrived a few minutes later and the inmate was transported to the hospital. He was pronounced dead a short time later.
The case is still under investigation. An autopsy is being scheduled for next week. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
