An inmate in the Humboldt County Correctional Facility attempted suicide late yesterday afternoon. At about 3:00 p.m. a correctional officer discovered the 25-year-old man had hanged himself inside his cell. The man was housed alone inside the cell. Correctional staff immediately cut the man down and started resuscitation efforts. Medical staff also responded and assisted in the CPR and rescue breathing. The man was transported to a local hospital where he remains on life support.
He had been in custody since June 23 after being arrested by the Hoopa Valley Tribal Police Department. His charges included false imprisonment, battery, cruelty to a child, battery on a custodial officer, and multiple probation violations. He was awaiting transport to Napa State Hospital for a court ordered psychiatric evaluation.
The Sheriff’s Office is not releasing his name in order to protect his right to privacy under medical privacy laws.
