Just before midnight last night Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputies contacted a man on the pedestrian path at the Riverwalk Lodge in Fortuna. The man showed signs of being under the influence of an alcoholic beverage. Deputies discovered the man, Barry Hendricks, 31 of Berkeley, an outstanding warrant from Berkeley. As deputies placed Hendricks under arrest for his warrant, he began to resist deputies’ efforts to search him. Deputies moved Hendricks to the driver’s side fender of a patrol car to complete their search of him. Hendricks continued to be uncooperative and intentionally scratched the hood of the patrol car.
Once seated in the back of the patrol car, Hendricks began to kick a side rear window. Deputies removed Hendricks from the car to apply restraints to his legs to prevent him from kicking out the windows. As Deputies were returning Hendricks to the patrol car for transport to jail, Hendricks kicked a deputy in the head, just above the right eye.
Hendricks was transported to the Humboldt County Correctional Facility where he was booked for battery on a peace officer, threatening/resisting an executive officer, vandalism, resisting/obstructing a peace officer, and disorderly conduct (public intoxication). His bail has been set at $50,000 and he is expected to be arraigned on Monday. The deputy he kicked was not seriously injured.
