On 12-19-2007 at 1130 hours the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office and the Humboldt County Drug Task Force served two search warrants for indoor marijuana cultivation at two residences in McKinleyville.
The first residence was located on the 1200 block of Ian Street. Officers seized over 800 growing marijuana plants from inside of the residence that ranged in size from 2 inches to 2 feet. This residence had been converted to a commercial marijuana growing operation. Officers arrested Christopher Volas age 37 at the scene for cultivation, possession for sales of marijuana and conspiracy. Officers contacted PG&E and the Arcata Fire Department, who both responded to the residence. Officers were concerned of a possible fire hazard regarding the 1000-watt light bulbs and exposed electrical wires inside of the residence for the marijuana growing operation.
The second search warrant was served at a residence located on the 1200 block of School Road. This residence was associated with the residence located on Ian Street. Officers located a commercial marijuana growing operation inside of the residence that contained approximately 400 growing marijuana plants. The marijuana plants ranged in size from 2 inches to 2 feet in height. Officers arrested one suspect associated with this marijuana growing operation, who was identified as Derek Gilliand age 27. Gilliand was arrested for cultivation, possession of marijuana for sales and conspiracy.
Officers seized approximately twenty-one pounds of dried marijuana from both residences.
Officers have identified three more suspects in these two cases. Arrest warrants will be requested for those additional suspects through the Humboldt County District Attorney’s Office.
These cases are still under investigation.
