Two Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputies were injured early this morning as they arrested a man on numerous felony charges. Deputies Cyrus Silva and Matt Helm responded to the Blue Lake Casino at about 4:10 a.m. after it was reported that a patron might be using a stolen credit card. Deputies Silva and Helm were told by Casino Security Staff that they were suspicious of a man who had been using a credit card and presented a passport that had been altered.
The deputies were directed to Troy Arden Miller, 34 of Arcata and discovered he was on felony probation. The deputies asked Miller to step outside where they continued to question him. They conducted a pat-search of Miller (in accordance with his probation’s search and seizure clause) and found 5.9 grams of methamphetamine. Miller tried to run from the deputies who were able to bring him to the ground. Miller, who was under the influence of methamphetamine, continued to fight the deputies. Deputy Silva sustained a broken nose and Deputy Helm sprained his arm as Miller fought them. The Casino’s on-site security staff aided the deputies and Miller was taken into custody.
As Miller was being transported to the Humboldt County Correctional Facility he kicked out the window of the patrol vehicle. He attempted to get out of the car as it was still moving on Highway 101. Miller was out of the car window about to his waist when Deputy Helm was able to stop the car. Deputy Helm was able to get Miller safely back in the car and booked into the correctional facility. Aside from minor abrasions, Miller was uninjured. He has been booked on the following charges:
H&S 11377(a) – Possession of a controlled substance
H&S 11378 – Possession of a controlled substance for sale
PC 470(d) – Forgery
PC 484g – Use of forged access card or account information
