Humboldt County Sheriff’s Detectives, assisted by Investigators from the District Attorney’s Office, arrested a Eureka man Saturday after receiving reports that he had sexually abused a minor child. The investigation began the night before when the Sheriff’s Office received the initial report. Further investigation revealed the possibility of additional victims. At about 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Sheriff’s Deputies, a Detective, and a DA Investigator, served a warrant at the suspect’s home on the 3900 block of Cedar Street and arrested Andrew Brian Belant, 25, without incident.
Belant was employed at Jacoby Creek Elementary School as a teacher’s aid. The parents of children enrolled in that classroom have been notified. Belant was also a junior youth pastor at Eureka First Presbyterian Church; that church’s administration has also been cooperative in contacting its parishioners. Belant previously held positions with Lafayette Elementary School and the Humboldt Child Care Council.
Upon Belant’s arrest, he was transported to the Humboldt County Correctional Facility where he was booked for a lewd or lascivious act with a child under 14 and oral copulation with a child under 14. His bail was set at $300,000 and he is expected to be arraigned Wednesday.
If parents have questions or concerns about his case they can call Sheriff’s Detective Troy Garey at (707) 268-3643 or DA Investigator Bill Honsal at (707) 445-7411.
