An inmate stabbed another inmate last night in the Humboldt County Correctional Facility. At about 7:30 p.m. several inmates were in a dayroom (a common area) when Allen Christopher Guilliams, 30 of Rio Dell, attacked another man with a “homemade” weapon. Guilliams used a sharpened metal rod to stab the victim six times in the upper right shoulder and arm. The victim, Andrew Brian Belant, 25 of Eureka, was transported to a local hospital. He was treated for his injuries and returned to the Correctional Facility.
Guilliams has been charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon in jail. Guilliams has been in custody since November 14, 2008 after being arrested by the Eureka police department for evading a peace office (a felony), and driving without a license. He had also been booked for violating the terms of his parole.
The motive for the attack is still under investigation. This is the first stabbing inside the Humboldt County Jail in more than 20 years.
