Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested an Arcata man early this morning after responding to a report of a burglary in progress. At about 2:30 a.m. a resident at a home on the 3800 block of H Street in Eureka told Sheriff’s dispatchers he had been awakened by an intruder in his kitchen. The man further reported that he had retrieved his handgun and confronted the suspect, later identified as 18 year-old Curtis Daniel Bettencourt. The resident ordered Bettencourt several times to leave his home. When Bettencourt failed to leave, the resident fired one round from his pistol into the floor at the feet of Bettencourt. Bettencourt took a few steps toward the resident but then turned and left. Bettencourt then reportedly walked around to the front door of the same house and started knocking on the door, demanding to be let in.
Deputies arrived a short time later and found Bettencourt climbing over a fence near the H Street residence. Bettencourt displayed signs and symptoms of being under the influence of an alcoholic beverage. Deputies arrested Bettencourt for first-degree burglary and disorderly conduct (public intoxication). He was transported to the Humboldt County Correctional Facility where his bail was set at $25,000; he is expected to be arraigned by Thursday.
