Released By: Brenda Godsey

Location: Cutten

At about 1:00 this afternoon the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office was notified by concerned relatives that their family member was armed with a gun and suicidal. While Sheriff’s dispatcher’s attempted to contact the man by telephone, deputies responded to his residence. Once there, deputies made voice contact with the man but he barricaded himself inside an upstairs bedroom. The residence, on the 2200 block of Primrose Avenue, Eureka, is adjacent to Cutten Elementary School. The Sheriff’s Office notified the school of the nearby police action and the school went into a safety lock-down. A Deputy from the Sheriff’s Crisis Negotiation Team was sent to the scene to assist. Additionally, a mental health professional who was familiar with the man was on scene working with law enforcement. Deputies continued to talk with the man for almost two hours in an effort to find a safe conclusion. During the negotiations the man made several claims about having a gun and he told deputies he was only going to come out with a gun in his hand. At about 2:55 p.m. the man was convinced to throw his weapon out the window. When he did, deputies entered the bedroom and detained the man. He was transported to Semper Virens for evaluation. There were no injuries reported. Deputies recovered the man’s weapon and determined it was an Airsoft Glock replica pistol.
