The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation into the death of a Trinidad man; the investigation is now classified as a homicide. The victim has been identified as 59-year-old William John Lundy. An autopsy was conducted Monday and the cause of death was determined to be a gunshot wound.
The case came to the attention of law enforcement Saturday when the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office received a call from the Kansas Highway Patrol. State Troopers there conducted a vehicle investigation on a car that was registered to Mr. Lundy in Trinidad. They requested a welfare check of Mr. Lundy. California State Park Rangers went to his residence (a 5th wheel travel trailer) and found him deceased. Sheriff’s Deputies and Investigators arrived a short time later. They obtained a search warrant and recovered evidence from the trailer.
The Kansas Highway Patrol arrested the man who was driving Mr. Lundy’s vehicle in Kansas for matters unrelated to this case. Humboldt County Sheriff’s Investigators will travel to Kansas this week to conduct further investigation.
The Sheriff’s Office is not releasing how many times or where on his body Mr. Lundy was shot. Anyone with information about this case should call Detective Cheryl Franco at (707) 268-3644.
