At about 7:40 yesterday evening a Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputy received a report of a wanted parolee sitting in a parked car at a Redway motel. The deputy arrived at the location and recognized Bret Lawrence Swortzel, 31 of Redway, who was seated inside a vehicle. The deputy confirmed that Swortzel had an outstanding warrant for a parole violation and placed him under arrest. Subsequent to Swortzel’s arrest, the deputy searched Swortzel’s vehicle per the terms of his parole. Inside the vehicle the deputy found four clear plastic bags, each one containing one pound (for a total of four pounds) of processed marijuana “bud.” Additionally, the deputy located a 12-gauge shotgun with a pistol grip and folding stock. Live ammunition for the shotgun was located nearby inside the vehicle.
Swortzel was transported to the Humboldt County Correctional Facility where he was booked for being a felon in possession of a firearm, being armed with a firearm in the commission of a felony, possession of ammunition by a person prohibited from possessing a firearm, possession of marijuana for sale, and a parole violation. He is expected to be arraigned Friday and he is not eligible to post bail due to his parole status.
