The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office is warning Cutten residents of an increase in residential burglaries in recent weeks. The Sheriff’s Office has received more than a dozen reports of burglaries with similar circumstances. The pattern involves a suspect (or suspects) stealing items from garages after a garage door is left open, usually at night. In some cases, motorcycles have been stolen from the garage when the thief finds the keys left in the ignition. In other cases, no entry is made into a garage but vehicles that have been left unlocked are targeted.
The Sheriff’s Office is reminding our community that many times burglaries are crimes of opportunity. Residents can make themselves “target hard” by taking a few moments to review a few burglary prevention tips. While not an all-inclusive list, residents should install deadbolt locks, keep garage doors locked, secure sliding doors and windows, and never store valuable in their vehicles. As always, work together with neighbors and if going away, tell a trusted neighbor and ask them to watch your property.
