Early yesterday morning, Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a reported attempted murder at a residence. At about 1 a.m., Deputies arrived at the residence on the 1600 block of Johnson Rd. in McKinleyville and learned one victim had been transported to local hospital. A witness told deputies he and his friend were both inside the house when he heard a knock at the door. He opened the door slightly and saw a person dressed all in black and wearing a mask. The witness also saw that the suspect was holding a firearm. The witness attempted to shut the door, however, the suspect began to push the door open. The witness called for his friend to help. His friend came to the door and pushed the suspect backward. Both residents recalled hearing a “pop” sound. The suspect then fled from the house.
One of the men at the house then realized he was in pain and he was transported to the hospital for treatment. Doctors discovered he had, in fact, been shot. The shooting victim added that he believed there may have been as many as four suspects, two of them armed. He added that the suspects fled on foot but a short time later he heard a car engine start. He noted the vehicle had a loud, modified exhaust but he was unable to see the car as it was obstructed from his view.
The victim said all four suspects were wearing black clothing and wore masks. The suspect who came to the door was described as about 5’7” tall. He was wearing a mask similar to the one seen in the movie “Scream.”
