Subject: Suspicious Fire
Contact: Brenda Gainey
Case No#: 200305771
Released By: Brenda Gainey

Location: Fortuna

Early this morning Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a reported residential fire on the 2200 block of Perras Court in Fortuna. Shortly after midnight the Fortuna Fire Department and the Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the residence after receiving a 911 call. Personnel from the Fortuna Fire Department arrived and were able to rescue two children from the burning structure. The children’s mother, who had reported the fire, had been able to escape earlier through a window.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation but is considered suspicious. As of 3:00 PM today, Sheriff’s Investigators and personnel from the county’s Arson Task Force have been at the scene from the time they were called at 12:30 this morning.

The children rescued at the fire have been airlifted to a Bay Area burn center where they are in critical condition. Their mother was treated and released at a local hospital.
Because of the suspicious nature of the fire, and the ongoing investigation, few other details can be released at this time. More information will be released as the investigation progresses.
