On 02-27-2012, approximately 9:00 p.m. a Humboldt County Sheriffs deputy was driving north on US 101 near Thompkins Hill Road, Eureka when he saw a 2010 Purple Hyundai Accent traveling northbound at a high rate of speed ahead of him. As the deputy caught up to the vehicle near Humboldt Hill Road, Eureka he activated his overhead lights to conduct a traffic stop. The vehicle accelerated to over 100 miles per hour and took the Herrick Road Exit. As it reached the stop sign at Herrick Road and US 101, it skidded through the stop sign and drove back onto Broadway Avenue, Eureka. The deputy activated his siren and pursed the vehicle which continued on north Broadway running several stop lights. The vehicle drove up Harris Street East bound and turned onto Central Avenue, Eureka before eventually skiding into a curb at Soule Street and Allard Avenue, Eureka and the driver jumped out of the vehicle and ran away from it. The deputy chased after the driver who tripped and fell. The deputy took the driver into custody. The driver was identified as Morgan Donald Wright, 20 years old of Ferndale.
The deputy was assisted by Eureka Police who arrived on scene and contacted a female passenger in the vehicle. The passenger was a 16 year old female from Eureka. She was released at the scene to her mother.
Deputies searched the suspect vehicle and located 11 grams of concentrated cannabis (Hash).
Wright was booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on charges of felony evasion, resisting arrest, child endangerment, transportation of marijuana and possession of concentrated cannabis. His bail is set at $50,000.00.
