A Hoopa family was found safe Sunday evening after a being stranded overnight on Bee Mountain. The family, Ronald Reed, Stevie Bailey, and four children had left their home in Hoopa at about noon on Saturday to look for a Christmas tree in the mountains. At about 10:15 PM, when the family hadn’t returned, relatives called the Sheriff Office to report them missing.
Deputies from the Sheriff’s Special Services Division, members of the Sheriff’s Posse, officers from the Hoopa Valley Tribal Police, and friends and family of the missing group searched overnight and all day Sunday. The search was made difficult because the family hadn’t been specific about where they planned to look for their tree. That created a wide search area that included the mountains around Hoopa, Weitchpec, and Orleans.
The family was found at about 7:00 PM Sunday evening by relatives who had joined the search. They were found on Lower Cappell Road below Bee Mountain after staying over-night in an isolated cabin. Aside from being cold and hungry, they were uninjured.
