A twenty-seven year-old man drowned this afternoon in the Trinity River while trying to rescue his dog. Shortly before 1:00 PM Sheriff’s Deputies and Hoopa Valley Tribal Police Officers responded to the Tish Tang Campground after it was reported that a man was trapped in the river. Hoopa Tribal Officers launched a boat and recovered the body of the man a short time later. The victim’s companion told deputies that the man had gone into the river after their dog began to have trouble in the water. The dog was able to make it back to the shore but the man became trapped in an eddy. The identification of the victim is being withheld pending the notification of the next of kin.
