Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested an Arcata man yesterday after he allegedly burned another man with the heated blade of a knife. At about 5:30 yesterday morning Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a 911 call. The caller reported that a young man had run to her residence and asked for help, stating that he had been burned with a hot knife. Sheriff’s Deputies arrived at the caller’s home in McKinleyville where they found the twenty year-old victim. The man told deputies he had been held for about two hours at another residence on the 1900 block of Pishka Court in McKinleyville. He said he had been beaten and threatened by another man identified as Vernon James Weatherford. The victim reported that Weatherford threatened to kill him with a knife, at one point cutting the victim’s shirt off him. The victim also reported that he was burned with the blade of the knife after it had been heated with a cigarette lighter. The victim escaped by jumping out an open window.

Sheriff’s Deputies located Vernon Weatherford at the Pishka Court residence and arrested him without incident. Weatherford was transported to the Humboldt County Correctional Facility where he was booked for torture, false imprisonment, battery with serious injury, and making threats with the intent to terrorize. His bail has been set at $100,000 and he is expected to be arraigned by Wednesday.
