Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Chesley Jay Evans this morning for the murder of Burgess Gene Kone. The case originated in May of 2001 when Mr. Kone, 55 of Bridgeville, was reported missing. By late June of 2001, investigators in the case believed that Mr. Kone was the victim of homicide. Then on June 21, 2001, Evans was arrested for cultivation of marijuana on Mr. Kone’s property (It should be noted that Mr. Kone did not have a history of, or connection to marijuana cultivation). Evans eventually pled guilty and was sentenced to sixteen months in state prison.

The investigation into Mr. Kone’s disappearance continued and additional witnesses and evidence were uncovered. On June 27, 2004 Evans was arrested and charged with forgery and possession of stolen property in connection with some personal checks that belonged to Mr. Kone. While Evans was in custody in the Humboldt County Correctional Facility, Deputy Tim McCollister continued to build the homicide case against Evans. As a result of Deputy McCollister’s continuing investigation, Evans was arrested for the murder of Burgess Kone this morning. Evans is expected to be arraigned on the murder charge on Friday.
