Location: Eureka

Following a routine traffic stop, Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested three men after finding guns and suspected methamphetamine in their car. At about 12:15 this morning, Deputy Jesse Taylor pulled over a vehicle near the intersection of Alpha Street and Meyers Avenue in Eureka for a vehicle code violation. Other deputies in the area heard the radio traffic and arrived at the scene to act as back—up. Deputy Taylor approached the vehicle and spoke to the driver, Jonathan Ray Hylton, 27 of Eureka, and advised Hylton of the reason for the stop.

Deputy Taylor then spotted a baggie of suspected methamphetamine on the dashboard of the car, directly in front of the passenger, Daniel Phillips, 25 of Eureka. Deputy Taylor pointed out the suspected drug to another deputy at the scene and asked him to have Phillips step out of the car. As Phillips was exiting the vehicle, Deputy Taylor saw the handle of a handgun in Phillips’ waistband. Deputy Taylor warned the other deputies of the gun and Phillips was immediately placed in handcuffs. Phillips had a loaded .22 caliber semi-automatic handgun in his waistband and an unloaded .25 caliber handgun in his coat pocket. The .22 caliber gun had been previously reported stolen from Fortuna. Phillips was also in possession of a baggie containing both .22 and .25 caliber ammunition.

Phillips, who is on parole, was arrested and booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance while armed with a loaded firearm, and possession of stolen property. He is ineligible for bail due to his parole status.

The driver of the car, Jonathan Hylton, was arrested for driving on a suspended license. He was booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility and released on his own recognizance.

A third occupant of the car, Joseph Scott Huff, 22 of Eureka, was arrested on an outstanding bench warrant for driving without a license. He was booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility and released on his own recognizance.
