Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to Orick Elementary School this morning after receiving reports of gunfire at the school. At about 10:15 a.m. students at Orick Elementary School were on the playground when they heard shots being fired. School officials placed the school in lock-down and called the Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff’s Deputies, State Park Rangers, and Trinidad Police Personnel with a canine unit responded to the school.
The school and surrounding areas were searched for a possible armed suspect. A concerned citizen spotted two boys with a .22 caliber rifle walking out of a field near the school and held them until Sheriff’s Deputies detained them.
After further investigation, deputies determined that there were three additional boys involved. The three were located at the Orick Trailer Park and they were detained also. The investigation revealed that all five boys, who are all between eleven and twelve years old, had been firing the rifle in a nearby pasture. It does not appear that they were intentionally shooting at the school. However, the case is still under investigation and when it is complete, it will be forwarded to Juvenile Probation (as is the procedure for a juvenile case).
Several witnesses reported hearing what they believed might have been bullets hitting the school’s bus garage, however deputies could not find any evidence that the building had been hit. There were no injuries from this morning’s incident.
