Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested two men early yesterday morning after finding a carload of stolen property inside the vehicle the two men occupied. At about 4:30 Monday morning, Deputy Jesse Taylor saw a car leave an apartment complex on the 2500 block of Harris Street. The driver pulled onto Harris St. and stopped abruptly upon seeing Deputy Taylor. The driver put the vehicle into reverse and returned to the apartment complex’s parking lot. Finding the situation suspicious, Deputy Taylor contacted the driver of the vehicle and his passenger.
Further investigation revealed that the vehicle was stolen. The driver, Brian Hopkins, 22 of Eureka, and his passenger, Michael Counts, 19 of Eureka, were both arrested. Inside the stolen vehicle, deputies found several backpacks, duffel bags, and boxes that contained more stolen property.
Evidence at the scene indicated that most of the stolen property may have been taken from car burglaries during the overnight hours of August 28/29. The recovered property included CD and DVD players, backpacks with clothing, a sewing machine, an AM/FM radio, a tape deck, and miscellaneous videotapes.
The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office is encouraging individuals in the public to contact us at (707)445-7251 if they believe any of the recovered property may belong to them. Please refer to case number 200505217 when calling.
Hopkins and Counts were both transported to the Humboldt County Correctional Facility. Hopkins charges include vehicle theft, possession of stolen property, burglary, and possession of burglary tools. His bail was set at $50,000. Counts was charged with possession of stolen property, burglary, and possession of drug paraphernalia. His bail was also set at $50,000. Both men are scheduled to be arraigned by Wednesday.
