Humboldt County Sheriff Gary Philp is pleased to announce the promotion of Michael Downey to Undersheriff, effective May 7. 2006. Undersheriff Downey joined the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office 20 years ago. Previously, he worked for four years as a reserve deputy with San Diego Sheriff’s Office. Undersheriff Downey will assume second-in-command duties of the Sheriff’s Office, including overseeing all bureaus, division, and units within the agency.
Prior to his promotion, Undersheriff Downey served as the Lieutenant in the McKinleyville Station and most recently as the Main Station Patrol Lieutenant. He has also worked as the Garberville Station Sergeant, in the Drug Enforcement Unit, as a Field Training Officer, and a Firearms Instructor.
“Mike is a very well-rounded deputy and very community minded,” said Sheriff Philp. “I know in his role as Undersheriff he will be a very positive leader in our office and to the citizens of Humboldt County.”
He has been married to his wife Annette for 25 years and they have six children ranging in age from 9 to 25 years. In his off time, Undersheriff Downey is very involved in church activities and enjoys working with wood, backpacking and spending time with his family.
